About the Program

At the University of Southern California (USC) Keck School of Medicine, we provide a global comprehensive training program in Interventional Pulmonology (IP).

Not only do we emphasize excellence in training for advanced diagnostics and interventional procedures, but we also incorporate the cerebral aspects of oncopulmonology—including the evaluation of new lung nodules and masses, as well as the diagnostic workup of new infiltrates in cancer patients which may represent infection, inflammation, progression of disease, or therapy-related toxicities.

We also have a very close working relationship with Thoracic Surgery, Otolaryngology, Anesthesia, and Medical Oncology. Our complimentary educational missions bring our subspecialties together to improve the educational experience of the IP fellow.

In addition, the IP Fellow is seen as an asset and educational resource for our 21 general pulmonary and critical care fellows. Working closely together, the IP fellow often serves as a mentor and supervising instructor to their junior colleagues during the course of their fellowship.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Program showcases/outcomes

  • Unique access to a 400-bed tertiary care university hospital and a 60-bed comprehensive cancer center in the middle of downtown Los Angeles. This provides a robust training experience with exposure to both traditional academic and private practice environments, all on one campus.

  • A weekly Multidisciplinary Thoracic Oncology Tumor Board plus Multidisciplinary Complex Airway Conference gives the IP fellow an opportunity for 360-degree training as part of an integrated team.  The fellow will also participate in combined cases with thoracic surgery and ENT in the operating room.

  • Our fellows have protected time to attend the annual AABIP interventional fellows’ bootcamp in July as well as many other hands-on training seminars. The fellow is also strongly encouraged to present scholarly work at national meetings, and we fully support them with time off and mentorship of their submissions.

  • The IP fellow will meet with the Program Director on a monthly and quarterly basis to ensure that all educational objectives are met.

  • This IP training program is ACGME certified.
